Making reward exchange self-serve

Giving marketers the ability to set up, manage, and analyze reward exchanges in their loyalty programs.

Overview

SaaSquatch is a loyalty and referral software built for tech companies that offers reward exchange features, letting participants choose what reward they want to get.

Up until this project, our reward exchange feature could only be implemented by the SaaSquatch development and success teams. There was no way for our users to set up or manage their own reward exchange rules, a point of significant friction in the setup and launch experience.

In addition to making this feature self-serve, we wanted to improve the experience around reporting and analytics, a key part in understanding how well their loyalty program is performing.

The process

Our team works on six week cycles, borrowing the principles of project management from Shape Up. This meant that in the first two weeks, the goal of the entire team was to build out a key piece of the project end-to-end. Working closely with the developers, project managers, and product managers, I sketched out and ideated on the most important part of the project: setting up the exchange rules. To achieve this, the first step was to understand the current setup experience, research how others solved the problem, and sketch out as many ideas as possible.

Virtual sketching and ideation to understand the problem

The following weeks consisted of numerous rounds of design review, playtesting, usability testing, updates to the designs, updates to the copy, and constant communication with the project manager and developers.
